Chances are you have heard the saying, “don’t let the bed bugs bite” and wondered exactly what that meant. Most people will tell you not to worry because bed bugs are a thing of the past. However, over the past year or two, there has been a resurgence and bed bugs are creating havoc in major cities like Atlanta, New York City, Miami, and Dallas.
So what exactly are bed bugs? Bed bugs are tiny insects that feed on human or animal blood. They often infest nests of certain types of animals but also will infest human beds. Bed Bugs are just one type of many bugs that can infest a house or your bed so make a careful observation so that you can determine exactly what has infested your home.
Most of the time it may take several weeks of being bitten before you will develop an allergy to bed bugs. Most people find beg bug bites no more irritating then mosquito bites. There is currently no scientific proof that bed bugs spread disease or illness either. However, they are a pest and this means they still need to be eliminated from your house or bed. If you are noticing that you are being bit mostly at night, then chances are you are being bit by bed bugs. Bed bugs feed at night, unlike fleas that bite regardless of the time of day.
During your travels, if you encounter bed bugs at your hotel or somewhere else, contact management immediately. Allow proper steps to be taken to remove bed bugs so that they do not spread and affect other people. Most of the time, hotel management will compensate you and give you a different room. Make sure to vacuum and wash all your clothes so that you do not bring bed bugs into other places.
If management is uncooperative or you are unsure how to deal with management, contact a local health agency or housing authority. They should be able to help you by explaining your rights and duties. If bed bugs appear in your own house, a local exterminator should be able to get rid of bed bugs within a day or so. After the exterminator leaves, it is still recommended that you wash all clothes, blankets, sheets, etc. to kill off any remaining bed bugs. Bed Bugs can be an annoying pest but if you are vigilant and prevent them from spreading, they can be extremely harmless and easy to remove.
