Head Injuries

Head trauma is the most common injury suffered by victims of serious car accidents. The side effects of head injuries depend largely on the severity of the damage as well as the part of the brain affected. For this reason, symptoms can range from minor headaches and dizziness to memory loss and unconsciousness. Treating even minor injuries can be prohibitively expensive, so if you are a resident of Meriwether County and suffered a head injury in an accident caused by another person’s negligence, it is critical to speak with an experienced personal injury attorney who can help you seek the compensation that will allow you to obtain the best possible medical care.

Closed Head Injuries

Physicians generally recognize two main types of head injuries - closed head injuries and open, or penetrating head injuries. Closed head injuries occur when someone receives a direct blow to the head, which in turn causes the brain to come into contact with the inside of the skull. Many victims are initially unaware that they have suffered a closed head injury because there are often few to no outward signs. Although minor closed head injuries may only result in sporadic headaches, more severe injuries can lead to brain swelling, which can permanently damage the brain tissue and nerve cells.

Evidence of head injuries can take days or even weeks to manifest, which makes them extremely dangerous. For this reason, it is important for accident victims who strike their heads to keep an eye out for some or all of the following symptoms:

  • A loss of consciousness;
  • Convulsions and seizures;
  • Difficulty speaking;
  • Dilated pupils;
  • Persistent headaches;
  • Dizziness;
  • Moodiness;
  • Confusion or difficulty focusing;
  • A change in sleep patterns;
  • Nausea or vomiting; and
  • Vision problems.

The type of treatment required in closed head injury cases depends on the severity of the injury. For instance, mild injuries usually only require rest, while more serious injuries may need to be treated through surgery.

Open Head Injuries

Unlike closed head injuries, open head injuries involve penetration of the skull itself. This in turn can cause the fractured skull fragments to pierce the brain tissue, which can cause permanent damage. To avoid this, surgeons must attempt to repair the fracture and remove the damaged tissue with the end goal of maintaining blood flow and oxygen to the brain. Victims of open head injuries may also suffer from lacerations caused by the skull fragments coming into contact with the brain, which can cause bleeding in the brain.

Open head injuries, although dangerous, are often more easily diagnosed than closed head injuries because there is physical evidence of trauma. However, before performing surgery, the physician must administer a series of tests, including CT scans and MRIs before confirming the extent of the damage.
